An all-Big-Ten choice and Big Ten Medal of Honor winner in 1972, Maurie still holds many Northwestern passing records. After appearing in the North-South Shrine Game, he was signed as a free-agent by the Dallas Cowboys, but was released just before the '72 season opened. The same thing happened at Oakland the following season. He was director of the Wisconsin chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes until reporting to the Fire's training camp.
